Lucas Oil Stadium
Currently under construction in Indianapolis is the Lucas Oil Stadium. The sports facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008 and will replace the RCA Dome. The RCA Dome has been open since 1983 and is attached to the Indianapolis Convention Center. The Dome has been the home of the Indianapolis Colts football team for many years but once the Lucas Oil Stadium is complete it will become their new home and the RCA Dome will be demolished. In addition to the new stadium, there are plans for a high rise hotel to be built as well.
The stadium will feature a retractable roof and window wall, which will allow the Colts to play outside. The window wall will allow additional light into the stadium when it’s closed. Aside from hosting the Colts, the stadium will be equipped with the mechanics to quickly convert it to accommodate other types of events. This feature was included in the design so that the building could be put to more use. Therefore, increasing the revenue it brings in. Some of the other planned events include the semifinal and final rounds of the Men’s Final Four in 2010, and the Women’s Final Four in 2011, the Bands of America Grand National Championships, and the city of Indianapolis has even put a bid in to host the 2011 Super Bowl.
In February 2006, it was announced that the naming rights to the stadium were purchased by Lucas Oil for $120 million. Prior to this purchase the building was referred to as the Indiana Stadium. The expected cost of building the Lucas Oil Stadium is $675 million. The stadium is being financed by funds raised by the State of Indiana and the City of Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Colts are even pledging $100 million toward its completion.
